Being a Bellingham based company we’re always looking for chances to collaborate with artists and musicians from the area. Arlen came to us after finishing his first album asking to help him bring visuals to his song “In Bloom”. Our challenge was to create a concept that captured the feeling of entering spring both metaphorically and literally in the dark winter of Bellingham.

CREATIVE PHASE

We had an idea inspired by the incredible photographer Karman Verdi to do projection mapping where one person was real and the other was a projection that faded away as a new season came in.

PRODUCTION

In order to accomplish this we decided to do one day where we shot all the footage that would be projected and then another where we would use the projections.

POST

When we put together the first draft of the edit and sat with it, we unanimously agreed that something was missing. In service of having a bit more of an organic film we didn’t do any storyboarding or animatics as we often do on our projects, and the cost was having a bit more of an unpredictable edit.

After several discussions with Arlen we decided to do a short day of re-shoots. This is when we captured the footage establishing Lioness (Carly) earlier, as well as the footage of Arlen singing. Surprisingly this ended up being one of the most fun shoot days, a tiny crew and a lot of room to play around.

It always feels a bit like you did something wrong when you need to do a re-shoot, but it can be valuable to keep that door open. Sometimes just a few extra shots can transform a film, and no matter how much planning you do, you never have the perspective you do once you have an edited film sitting in front of you.
